Women in the Americas have inherited a doubly ruptured past. The violent establishment of most |New World| nations, brought about through a colonization process which attempted to erase the past winch preceded it, in addition to the constant immigration and assimilation severing ties with the homeland for generations of newcomers, have created a serious knowledge gap about dm sources of our cultures and the processes of their formation. The exclusion of women from most written histories has only exacerbated this problem. Through the use of historiographic metafictions or substantiel historical references, Margaret Atwood (English Canada), Maryse Condé (Guadeloupe), Rosario Ferré (Puerto Rico), Amie Hébert (Québec), Nélida Piňon (Brazil) and Leslie Marmon Silko (U.S. Native American) combat this cultural amnesia and work toward establishing a sense of tradition and continuity for Inter-American women. The texts considered here, written between 1970 and 1996, employ the medium of fiction to engage with the past in a two-fold process, first re-defining what constitutes history and merits inclusion in die written record, then using that new version of history to work toward resistance, reconciliation, and recuperation at the familial, national, and regional levels. Using a theoretical framework drawn from feminist, New Historicist, and post-colonial approaches, I show how these novels highlight die shortcomings of traditional modes of historiography and offer an array of alternative models demanding that both reader and writer engage with die past more consciously.
